Gates of Vienna News Feed 7/24/2016

A 16-year-old Afghan has been arrested in Munich as an accomplice to Ali David Sonboly, the young man who went on a killing spree on Friday before committing suicide. The Afghan is thought to have assisted Mr. Sonboly in his efforts to entice people to the McDonald’s before the shooting, and investigators believe he knew about the attack in advance, but failed to report it.

Dismayed by Donald Trump, Michael Bloomberg Will Endorse Hillary Clinton

Michael R. Bloomberg, who bypassed his own run for the presidency this election cycle, will endorse Hillary Clinton in a prime-time address at the Democratic convention and make the case for Mrs. Clinton as the best choice for moderate voters in 2016, an adviser to Mr. Bloomberg said.

The news is an unexpected move from Mr. Bloomberg, who has not been a member of the Democratic Party since 2000; was elected the mayor of New York City as a Republican; and later became an independent.

But it reflects Mr. Bloomberg’s increasing dismay about the rise of Donald J. Trump and a determination to see that the Republican nominee is defeated.

Mrs. Clinton is seeking to reach out to middle-of-the-road swing voters and even moderate Republicans uneasy about Mr. Trump. Polls show that significant numbers of Republicans remain wary of Mr. Trump, and question his fitness for the presidency.

Obama’s Half-Brother Says He’s Voting for Donald Trump

President Obama’s Kenyan half-brother wants to make America great again — so he’s voting for Donald Trump.

“I like Donald Trump because he speaks from the heart,” Malik Obama told The Post from his home in the rural village of Kogelo. “Make America Great Again is a great slogan. I would like to meet him.”

Obama, 58, a longtime Democrat, said his “deep disappointment” in his brother Barack’s administration has led him to recently switch allegiance to “the party of Lincoln.”

The last straw, he said, came earlier this month when FBI Director James Comey recommended not prosecuting Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over her use of a private e-mail servers while secretary of state.

“She should have known better as the custodian of classified information,” said Obama.

Patriotic Muslims Chalk ‘Free Milo’ On Their Family-Owned Mosque

A Muslim family who support Breitbart Tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos’ right to free speech have chalked a “Free Milo” slogan outside their family Mosque in Fargo, North Dakota in an act of solidarity following Milo’s permanent ban from Twitter.

Nidal Omar is the leader of the Islamic Society in Fargo and is head of the local mosque. He was introduced to Milo by his son Jamal Omar, who explained Milo’s beliefs to Nidal and outlined why they should show their disapproval of Twitter’s crackdown.

“My son (Jamal) is a big fan of Milo, and so when he came up to me asking to do this I was reluctant at first. I then thought of the freedoms I get to take advantage of, freedom of speech is something I’ve been able to enjoy ever since I came to the states 30 years ago to attend university, and I would hate for it to be any other way.”

Nidal’s son Jamal then wrote “Free Milo” on a pillar outside the Mosque and made a short video which can be seen below. When asked for comment on his support of Milo despite Milo’s criticism of the Islamic religion, this is what Jamal had to say,

“We call ourselves moderate Muslims but get mad when people label the extremists, Milo gave us an ideological ultimatum, either you’re with the free world or against it. That doesn’t mean forsake Islam but to disavow anyone who thinks what those ISIS monsters do is anything less than atrocious.”

“If we’re allowed to believe what we want why can’t a man who wants to find solutions to the world’s problems believe in the truth? I don’t understand how Jack can talk about how not all Muslims are bad then not ban the bad ones but then go around and ban the person who wants to get rid of the bad ones before the bad ones get rid of us.”

As Jamal aptly demonstrates, it’s quite possible to disagree with someones views on your religion while still accepting their right to criticise it. As Jamal said, when it comes to terrorism and religious fanaticism, you’re either with the free world or against it.

Trump: France May Face More Screening After Terror Attacks

Donald Trump said Sunday he would subject people from France, among other countries, to “extreme vetting” as they seek to enter the United States, a move he says is necessary to deter terror attacks.

The GOP presidential nominee, in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” was asked if his proposal might mean that ultimately far fewer people from overseas would be allowed into the U.S.

“Maybe we get to that point,” Trump replied, adding: “We have to be smart and we have to be vigilant and we have to be strong.”

In the interview, Trump also rejected suggestions that his stance on requiring NATO members to pay their share was a mistake; dismissed descriptions of his nomination acceptance speech as “dark,” instead calling it “optimistic”; and expressed disapproval of David Duke, the former Ku Klux Klan leader who is seeking a Senate seat from Louisiana.

Wasserman Schultz to Step Down as DNC Chairwoman, Amid Email Fallout

Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced Sunday she will soon step down as Democratic National Committee chairwoman, amid the fallout over leaked emails indicating an anti-Bernie Sanders bias in her operation — a stunning development just hours before the start of her party’s convention.

The rapid-fire set of developments ahead of the convention kick-off raise immediate questions about whether the party can unite its battling factions in Philadelphia this week.

Officials were clearly trying to prevent anger over the email leak controversy and other issues from disrupting proceedings. The emails only bolstered claims from Sanders — and Republican nominee Donald Trump — that the system was rigged against the Vermont senator.

Afghan Youth Arrested Over Possible Role in Munich Shooting — Police

BERLIN, July 24 (Reuters) — German police arrested a 16-year-old Afghan youth on Sunday on suspicion of a connection to the killing of nine people by an 18-year-old gunman in Munich, authorities said.

The youth was under investigation for possibly having failed to report the plans of the gunman, who later shot himself, and may have played a role in a Facebook posting that invited people to the scene of the shooting, a police statement said.

“There is a suspicion that the 16-year-old is a possible tacit accomplice to (Friday’s) attack,” it said. Police earlier said the gunman was a deranged Iranian-German who was fixated with mass killings but not inspired by Islamist militancy. (Reporting by Andrea Shalal; editing by Mark Heinrich)

Afghan Teen Arrested in Germany in Connection to Munich Attack

An Afghan teenager was arrested on Sunday in Germany on suspicion that he was connected to Friday’s mass attack in Munich, police said.

The 16-year-old male may have known about the plans of the gunman, who killed nine people, but the teen did not tell authorities, officials said. The teen is also suspected of having played a role in a Facebook post that invited the public to a location near where the deadly shooting later took place, Reuters reported.

Bulgaria Seeks Allies to Defend Against Turkish Invasion of Europe

One of Bulgaria’s top businessmen has called for Balkan countries to form a union to defend against a potential Turkish invasion of Europe. Vasil Vasilev said that the supposedly “tolerant” and “solidarity”-loving European Union (EU) could not be relied on to protect the Balkans if “hundreds of thousands of so-called refugees” from Turkey descend on them.

The businessman and philanthropist recommended that Bulgaria form a union with other Balkan countries who would be threatened by Turkish moves to expand their territory and influence.

He said: “These are mostly Bulgaria and Greece, as well as Serbia and Macedonia. They should form some kind of a union to stop the Turkish threat and this may be the most reliable thing we can count on.”

Mr. Vasilev contended that the EU’s professed values of “tolerance and pan-European solidarity” do not exist except when it suits the wishes of the people ruling the bloc.

Because of this, Mr. Vasilev said Bulgarians could not rely on NATO nor the EU for protection in the case of a Turkish invasion of the country.

European Union: Brussels to Fine Greece Over State Aid for Hellenic Shipyards

The EU Commission will fine Greece over its help for ship builders

Out of touch eurocrats are seeking a court order for a massive financial crackdown on the struggling country, which has been driven into third world poverty by EU policies.

They want to impose a six million euro upfront penalty on Greece’s cash-strapped government, to be followed by a daily levy of 34,974 euros.

The row has erupted because Greek ministers used taxpayers money to save the Hellenic Shipyards company in 2008, guaranteeing the jobs of more than a thousand workers.

The shipyard was one of the country’s biggest and the government provided a temporary rescue package, before selling it on to a German company, in a case echoing Britain’s bid to save the Port Talbot steelworks…

Germany Blast: Ansbach Bar Explosion ‘Leaves One Dead’

An explosion at a bar in the southern German city of Ansbach, near Nuremberg, has killed one person and injured several others, reports say.

The cause is unclear although the city’s mayor is quoted as saying it was an “explosive device”.

The incident comes amid tension following other bloody events in Germany over the past week.

A shooting rampage in Munich on Friday left nine dead while an axe attack on a train a week ago injured several people.

Italy Should Quit EU Says Nigel Farage

UKIP chief has kind words for Grillo

(ANSA) — Cleveland, July 21 — Italy should leave the European Union before it destroys it, the leader of the rightwing UK Independence Party (UKIP) told ANSA on Thursday. “Do I have a message for Italy?” MEP Nigel Farage said at the Republican Party convention in Cleveland, Ohio, where he arrived as a guest today. “Yes, I do: leave Europe or you will destroy it”.

Asked how he gets along with fellow MEPs from Italy, Farage said “very well”.

“I still work with Beppe’s group,” he said in reference to anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) chief Beppe Grillo. “Our agenda is slightly different, but we’re in the same caucus”.

The M5S is currently the second-largest party in Italy after Premier Matteo Renzi’s center-left Democratic Party (PD).

Italy: Govt Summons Puglia Officials Over Xylella

Coldiretti says EU let disease in from South America

(ANSA) — Rome, July 22 — The government has summoned Puglia regional authorities to a meeting in the capital next week after the European Commission launched a fresh infringement procedure against Italy concerning an outbreak of the highly contagious Xylella disease affecting olive trees, ANSA sources said Friday.

Immediate action to fight the deadly plant pathogen will be on the table, the sources said.

Also on Thursday, Lecce Chief Prosecutor Cataldo Motta told ANSA he plans to apprise the European Commission of the fact that dealing with the disease without felling the trees appears to have restored olive groves from Brindisi to Lecce to health.

“Some olive groves have recovered perfectly thanks to…pruning and cleaning the ground beneath the canopy, nothing more,” Motta said.

EU directives have called for felling the affected trees as well as surrounding healthy ones in a bid to contain the outbreak.

The president of the Puglia branch of Coldiretti farmers association called the EU infringement procedure “unacceptable” and its directives “inapplicable”. “The EU has grave responsibilities in the matter of Xyella, both as far as its introduction (into Europe from South America) and on the way it dealt with the emergency,” Gianni Cantele said. The Union has failed to impose an embargo on the areas where the bacterium hails from — such as South America — and has “caused irreparable damage to Puglia’s olive cultivation”, he said.

“Thanks to the EU’s porous borders Xylella has become a European disease,” Cantele said. “The EU cannot keep rapping Member States on the knuckles without providing adequate support measures against the disease”.

Man Armed With Machete Kills Woman in Germany

An attacker has allegedly killed one woman and injured two people in the city of Reutlingen in southwest Germany, according to local media. The police reportedly confirmed that the man had been arrested.

The machete-wielding attacker sparked panic after killing a woman in a Turkish fast-food kiosk in downtown Reutlingen, German mass-circulation newspaper “Bild” reported Sunday.

Two more people were reportedly wounded and the man was said to have been arrested soon after the attack. The motive for the stabbing rampage was not immediately clear.

Authorities believe the man acted alone, according to Germany’s “Süddeutsche Zeitung” newspaper.

Germany is on edge following a deadly shooting spree in Munich less than two days ago, and a separate stabbing rampage on a Bavarian train last week. In both of these cases, attackers were teenagers with Muslim background. The train attack was conducted by an alleged Afghan refugee who had pledged alliance to the “Islamic State.”

However, the Friday shooting appeared not be motivated by political ideology, with German-Iranian attacker having a history of mental illness, according to German officials.

Munich Shootings: Police Arrest 16-Year-Old Afghan

Police in Munich say they have arrested a 16-year-old Afghan friend of David Ali Sonboly, who killed nine people at a Munich shopping centre on Friday.

Sonboly, 18, had been planning his attack for a year, police said earlier.

They say he had a Glock pistol which he may have bought on the so-called dark net.

A statement on Munich police’s Facebook page says: “There is a suspicion that the 16-year-old is a possible tacit accomplice to the attack.”

Libya Armed Groups Urge Fight Against French Troops

Armed groups including Islamists have urged Libyans to mobilise against French and other foreign troops deployed in the country, denouncing their presence as a “blatant aggression”.

The call by militias in the second city of Benghazi came after French President Francois Hollande confirmed on Wednesday that his country has soldiers in Libya.

Hollande made the announcement after three French troops were killed in Libya during a mission to gather intelligence.

His remarks sparked anti-French protests in several Libyan cities, while the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) said the presence of foreign troops was a “violation” of Libya’s sovereignty.

Iraq Digs Security Trench Around Fallujah After Recapturing City From ISIS

The Iraqi military will use a medieval tactic to keep control of Fallujah after recapturing it from the Islamic State group last month: It is digging a trench around the city.

ASEAN Split on How to Deal With China in South China Sea Row

Southeast Asia’s main grouping apparently failed to reach a consensus on how to deal with China’s territorial expansion in the South China Sea, intensifying a diplomatic stalemate that officials said they hope to resolve after closed-door parleys on Sunday.

The foreign ministers of the 10 countries that make up the Association of Southeast Asian Nations deliberated for several hours, continuing the unfruitful discussions their senior officials had on Saturday, but with no result.

ASEAN’s cardinal principle is decisions by consensus, which means any country can veto a proposal. This time, it is Cambodia, China’s close ally. In 2012, Cambodia also blocked a reference to the dispute, which ended with the ministers failing to issue a statement for the first time in the bloc’s history.

In accepting the Republican nomination on Thursday night, Trump said the country “must immediately suspend immigration from any nation that has been compromised by terrorism until such time it’s proven that vetting mechanisms have been put in place.” Trump made no mention of Muslims in the speech, leading many to conclude that Trump had formally changed his position — just as a number of his top allies, including his running mate, said he had.

Italy Fears ‘Calais-Style’ Camps as Migrant Backlog Worsens

Italy is scrambling to find extra places for incoming migrants amid fears the failure of a European relocation plan may result in mass encampments.

Some 135,000 people who have requested asylum are still waiting in Italian reception facilities to learn whether they will be allowed to stay and given the papers to travel, or will be earmarked for expulsion.

Frustrated by months of delays, some make their way to border crossings. Tighter security controls have made it harder to cross illegally into France, Switzerland and Austria, so many migrants set up camp while they wait for the opportunity.
