Shoeless in Detroit

American readers of certain age — and with a predilection for baseball lore — will remember the legendary Shoeless Joe Jackson, whose spectacular career was ended by the Black Sox scandal in 1919.

Shoeless Joe played for Chicago, but the following story about Shoeless Abdul and Shoeless Mahmoud comes from Detroit. It concerns what is currently the most pressing issue of public safety in the Motor City: the theft of shoes.
