The EDL March on Whitehall

Further update: Steen has several videos from Whitehall.

Update: more photos here.

The English Defence League organized a march on Westminster today. The original purpose was to lay flowers in remembrance of the slaughtered soldier Lee Rigby, and to show solidarity with the troops. When it emerged that Prime Minister David Cameron would be away on holiday, however, the itinerary was modified to include No. 10 Downing Street.

The Daily Mail reports that “Tensions on streets after slaughter of British soldier: War memorials defaced and mosque firebombed as EDL march on Westminster”.

There are photos here:

edl and patriots in london today at least 5000 i have heard nse — with Matthew Bakewell.

Other news is trickling in, including this message from an EDL source:

My friend who is with the EDL in Whitehall has been attacked with a bottle by UAF thugs and has been taken to hospital.

He has not replied to my messages since he went to hospital, so I don’t know the current situation.

There’s also this, from an EDL supporter on Facebook:

NO EDL HAVE BEEN FIGHTING!…they have been penned by the MET police again just like stow demo and the UAF have been launching an attack and burning poppies and no arrests made to them!..the UAF have also disrupted the minutes silence…disgusted i am.

And this report (along with more photos) from Focus forum:

MORE than 1,000 English Defence League (EDL) supporters marched towards Downing Street today, in the wake of the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby.

Flanked by police officers, the protesters chanted “Muslim killers off our streets” as they made their way along Whitehall in central London.

A much smaller group of anti-fascist demonstrators gathered opposite the EDL gathering holding an “EDL Racists” banner, and there were scuffles with the police from activists on both sides.

The EDL supporters and anti-fascists hurled dozens of glass bottles towards each other, and police officers dressed in riot gear intervened to stop them throwing missiles.

EDL leader Tommy Robinson told the demonstration: “This is a day of respect for our Armed Forces.”

The crowd repeatedly chanted “coward” after he claimed Prime Minister David Cameron was on holiday “because he doesn’t care”.

Mr Robinson added: “They’ve had their Arab Spring. This is time for the English Spring.”

The English Defence League descended on Whitehall to air its views

EDL protesters held placards that read “Blood on your hands” and “GB RIP”.

Support for the EDL has grown since the killing of Drummer Rigby in Woolwich on Wednesday in what was believed to be a religiously-motivated attack.

The anti-Islamic organisation more has 127,000 ‘likes’ on social networking site Facebook – an increase of more than 100,000 since the killing.

I’ll report more news as it comes in.

  4. The local newspaper, owned by the Daily Mail, takes the same biased line:police threaten strong action/inter-faith groups meet at muslem cultural centre/ant-fascists demonstrate in market square in case EDL turn up.The green/red arrows attached to the `comments` postings mostly go the other way:and it has enabled me to put in references to the EDL site;to the report on the EDL at *Chatham House*;and to the *Gates of Vienna*.Local newspapers are a good place to get over `contra`facts and information.

    • I used to think that Israel was the canary in the coal mine. I now think that the UK is such. With very low voter turn out, you are the first western country that will become Sharia compliant, not Israel.
